Donor & Sponsor Cultivation

This template follows the classic fundraising cultivation cycle, moving a prospective donor or sponsor from first identification to a secured gift and ongoing stewardship.

Why use it

Funding relationships are long games — some close in weeks, some take years. A board keeps every prospect warm and visible, so a promising sponsor doesn't go cold just because nobody was reminded to follow up.

What it covers

  • Identification — a prospective donor or sponsor enters the board.
  • Qualification — confirming capacity and interest, and setting a target ask.
  • Cultivation — building the relationship before any ask is made.
  • Solicitation — making the ask, matched to the prospect's capacity and preferences.
  • Stewardship — the gift is secured; acknowledge, recognize, and report impact.

Prospects who decline or go cold land in a lapsed stage — with a path back to cultivation when the time is right to re-engage.

"Not now" isn't "no"

The flow treats a declined ask as a reason to keep cultivating, not to give up — a "not yet" routes back to relationship-building instead of straight to lost. That mirrors how successful fundraising actually works.
